Why is it worth making your own face cream?

It’s worth making your face cream because you’re aware of what exactly is applied to your face. In cosmetics, that you buy in the shops the composition is usually very extensive, and many ingredient names are incomprehensible. They usually have preservatives to extend their shelf life.

On the other hand, in the homemade creams, no substances are added that can burden or negatively affect the skin. What’s more, the handmade product is created from the highest quality ingredients. You can be sure that the cream actually works on the skin.

Home made organic face cream

Some companies write in the ingredients, that they add products as coconut or almond oil, but the percentage is extremely low and sometimes they are low quality. In addition, when you make your own cream, you add ingredients at your discretion, e.g. fragrances that best suit you. By the way, it’s great fun that teaches creativity and self-sufficiency – we do not have to be dependent on cosmetics companies.

How does it look in practice?

  1. The water fraction plus glycerin – distilled water fits well here, whereas glycerin is not a necessary ingredient, but it is added for two reasons: it has hygroscopic (water-binding) properties, which moisturises the skin and improves the properties of our cream – the emulsion is smoother and more firm.
  2. Fat fraction – so all these goodies that we want to add to our cream! As a basis, I recommend some oil that will be well absorbed and not very greasy: such as almond or coconut oil, shea butter or avocado oil. The first attempt can be carried out with rapeseed oil, sunflower oil or olive oil, they will be “heavier” creams but you won’t waste “nice” oils if you fail. I did couple of times, it happens in the beginning, don’t give up.
  3. Emulsifier – is to combine water with oils.
  4. Other additions – vitamin E for youthful appearance of the skin, hyaluronic acid with moisturising effect or essential oils.

The method of preparing face cream – step by step

  1. Mix water with glycerin and set aside.
  2. In another saucepan or double boiler, on low heat, add oils, butters and emulsifier until they’ve melted completely.
  3. Cool the oils to the same temperature as the temperature of water with glycerine. This is very important! If you don’t have a thermometer, leave everything at room temperature for longer so that the temperatures are the same. The oil will have a semi-liquid consistency, do not worry about it.
  4. Now the magic begins: take the blender, begin to blend wax with oils, add water in small batches (you can do other way round, you will have good results as well). We blend at the highest speed – the next batch of water is added when the first is already absorbed.
  5. The cream will start to be light and fluffy.
  6. When we have added all the water we mix a little more, until an emulsion is formed.
  7. If you use additional ingredients add: hyaluronic acid, vitamin E, aromatic oils, preservative, whatever you want. Once again, blend strongly or just use spoon to mix everything properly.
  8. Transfer to clean jars and store in a cool place – I have a small jar in the bathroom, I keep the rest in the fridge 🙂 The consistency hardens in the fridge, but the cream melts under warmth of your skin.
